The problem
If a developer wants to add a battery on the same site as an existing wind farm — so that surplus power can be stored rather than wasted — the current rules require them to build a second, completely separate, grid connection for the battery.

A second cable, dug along the same route, at extra cost, extra time, and extra disruption to the land and communities along the way.
Meanwhile, wind farms are regularly told to stop generating because the grid is at capacity — a wasted resource, and a real cost. You pay more for dirtier energy.

The good news
The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has decided that wind and solar farms will be allowed to share a single grid connection with a battery on the same site. No second cable needed. Lower cost, faster delivery, less disruption. It's a genuinely positive step forward.

The bad news
Implementing that decision — the detailed rules and processes needed to let developers do this — is expected to take more than two years.

That's two more years of wind power going to waste when it doesn't have to. We think Irish consumers deserve better.

What we're asking for
Accelerate delivery of shared grid connections for co-located wind, solar and battery projects — from a 2+ year timeline down to 18, 12, or ideally 9 months.

Move forward on true hybrid connections — a direct link between the generator and the battery, so that when a wind or solar farm is told to stop producing, it can store that power instead of switching it off, and release it later when it's needed most.

Other countries that have done this have seen both electricity prices and carbon emissions falling. There's no reason Ireland can't do the same — this isn't complicated engineering, we’re not asking for new infrastructure to be built, it’s changing the rules to ensure a better deal for Irish families and businesses.
