Allowing Private Wires in Ireland – already common elsewhere in Europe – would accelerate investment in electricity infrastructure, encourage the development of renewable energy, reduce our carbon emissions and help to reduce the cost of electricity to businesses.
A private wire is a connection between a large energy user, like a factory or a data centre, and a wind or solar farm at a different location. It is not part of the electricity grid and is privately owned.
As well as helping businesses to cut their bills and their carbon emissions introducing private wires will ease congestion on the electricity grid. By getting some of their power directly from a wind or solar farm a factory or business needs to take less electricity from the national grid, freeing up space on the system for more renewables.
This could help to reduce the €450 million cost of wasted wind energy every year.
